Alloy + Grit Magazine

I’ve shot a lot of cars and trucks over the years, but virtually all of my automotive photography takes place on pavement. When you’re photographing a multi-million dollar Ferrari or Jaguar, the owner typically doesn’t want to go off-roading in them and they would look terribly out of place if you did. So, when I got a call about photographing a custom Land Rover for Alloy + Grit Magazine, I jumped at the opportunity. Although it wasn’t initially the plan, the editor of Alloy + Grit liked the photography so much that they made the truck the cover and they recently called on me to shoot another truck for the upcoming issue.

The Most Valuable Car Ever Sold at Auction

On a random afternoon in fall of 2018, one of my long time and favorite clients gave me a call asking if I might be available to travel for a shoot on short notice. Being that client was RM Sotheby’s and their emphasis on the car being something I “wouldn’t want to miss shooting”, I made my schedule work. It wasn’t until I was out in Washington at a hotel the night before the shoot that I found out what that car was, the legendary Ferrari 250 GTO. I’ve been fortunate enough to spend some time around a few 250 GTOs, but this was my first time shooting one or even seeing one in motion. It didn’t disappoint. As soon as the car was announced via press release, my photos were everywhere. There was a point where virtually every automotive related website and magazine was talking about it and using the photos I took. Unsurprisingly, it went across the auction block and set a record for the most valuable car ever sold at auction in August 2018. It sold for an astonishing $48,405,000.00. That lead to another round of my photos being used on website, magazines, newspapers and even books. […]

Piloti Shoes

Piloti called on me to photograph both the 2017 Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca and Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in Monterey, California. I was tasked with not only getting photos of the event action, but product shots on site as well. The shoot was booked just one week before the events and it was an intense, whirlwind trip with me flying in Saturday morning and back out Sunday evening, photographing one event each day. Given the nature of the trip, we didn’t have time to strategize much in advance and only after meeting with Piloti’s creative director on site Saturday did we come up with a concept and direction for the product photography. After shooting some samples, I proposed the idea of shooting across cars and other objects in the foreground and background, layering the model and shoes between while keeping the focus on the product. In addition to those product photos and the overall event coverage, we also focused on one particular driver and car that were competing in the racing at Laguna Seca, an Alfa Romeo brand ambassador and his 1967 Alfa Romeo T-33 2.5 Daytona. It was an exhausting but exciting two day […]

Billy F Gibbons

A little while back I was called on to photograph Billy F Gibbons, the charismatic frontman of the legendary band ZZ Top, for Via Corsa Magazine. We flew out to LAX and quickly headed north to his home in Beverly Hills. As we pulled towards his gate, we gave him a call, he buzzed us in and we were greeted by Billy and that famous orange beard, standing on his balcony waving us in. I was immediately impressed not only by how welcoming, gracious and friendly he was, but how comfortable I felt. He gave us a quick tour of his home and some of his cars before sitting down for an interview while I took some photos of his collection of African art and tribal headwear. After they finished with that, we took some portraits around his home and his garage before jumping in our rental and heading towards DTLA for lunch. Billy is a big fan of barbecue and took us to one of his favorite spots. After we got our fill of pulled pork, ribs, crab cakes and more, we got back in our car and headed over to Jimmy Shine’s hot rod shop. Traffic was heaving, […]

Russo and Steele

In addition to designing several websites and graphics for Russo and Steele, I’ve also done a very substantial amount of photography for them. While I conducted many, many automotive photo shoots for them, one of my biggest contributions came in the form of covering their annual Scottsdale auction as their staff photographer. I shot the auction for them for five years and my photos have been used in just about everything they’ve put together since I shot my first auction for them.

Mille Miglia

In May of last year I was tasked with traveling to Italy to cover the annual Mille Miglia road rally for Via Corsa Magazine. It was an exciting, but stressful assignment as I was traveling almost six thousand miles to a nation to cover an event I’ve never attended with a route we weren’t yet given. We sat down as a group and came up with a plan of attack. I traveled in a Via Corsa media car and we had to not only coordinate with the Via Corsa team running the rally in a modern Ferrari, but also had to make sure we were able to capture the larger, vintage event as well. It was a long, memorable week with an average of about four hours of sleep a night, but it was a hell of a ride and I think we came home with great photos and a fantastic article.

The Pinnacle Portfolio

Of all of the automotive photography projects I’ve worked on, the Pinnacle Portfolio for RM Sotheby’s has to be the most exciting and most exhausting. It was a full five days of shooting cars, 23 in total, in downtown Los Angeles. Not only were we shooting cars from sunrise to sunset, but we were scouting locations as we shot and I was processing these photos in my hotel room after shooting. 12+ hours of shooting, 6+ hours of editing, 2+ hours of driving every day for five days straight and I’d do it again in a heartbeat. Not only did I get to work with a great crew of people, but I got to shoot some of the rarest and most amazing cars in the world in some of the most interesting locations in Los Angeles. Not only did I shoot each car individually, but I got to shoot a handful of them as group and spent one afternoon selecting, staging and photographing a select group of eight cars that was heavily used to promote the collection. Not only were the group shots used on the cover of the catalog, but they were also used on a billboard in New […]

Concorso Arizona

I had tight ties to the Ferrari Club of America – Desert Region for many years. I designed, developed and maintained their website for years, photographed and promoted various events for them and, at one point, even sat on the board. Part of this relationship led me to develop and promote their premier annual event, the Concorso Arizona. Given only a logo for the event and some rough ideas they had, I developed two event posters, a promotional poster, a t-shirt, a flyer, an event book and a website.
